This class is crazy hard!!

I haven't taken figure drawing yet and still learning how to paint. Jackson has us painting models (clothed). I kinda feel like I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. It's so much fun though so I'm just going with it! It's not so bad right....? Long, long way to go on her though.

Tomorrow instead of meeting for class, we're going to Memphis on a field trip to an art museum. Pretty exited!! We leave campus at 1 and will get back around 9, hoping we could swing by the Rendezvous for dinner... I could make it happen.

Oh kinda interesting side note but February 1st, I had 107 page views!!! Pretty awesome! Still doesn't top last April with 657 haha! Nice to see that more than my sweet grandparents check out my work =]

My intermediate painting class is awesome. I don't know where I'm actually going to hang this skull painting... but it'll be great for halloween! That painting is a work in progress (WIP) but the coolest thing about this painting is that I got to build the frame, stretch the canvas, cover it in gesso, and then paint on it. Very, very cool.

I'm loving letterpress too!!! The type (letters) have to be placed upside-down and backwards, the exact way I think lol! I have yet to spell anything wrong but I'm not crossing my fingers.

A few follow up notes:
Pike also informed me that they will be using my t-shirt design for their posters too! So my design will be on people's backs and hanging all over campus!!
Terry Lee will also be printing my labels sometime next week and I'll be sipping on his wine! - pictures soon!
My dragon book was chosen to be submitted to the NASAD review so I'll have 3 works in the show, pretty freaking sweet.

Yall know anyone can comment on my posts! =]

Spring Semester

Third day of school and I'm already in love with my classes. I'm taking Letterpress, Web Design, Intermediate Painting, and Research and Writing this semester. I am so excited and obsessed with Letterpress! I feel like I'm going to learn so much in Web Design and I really, surprisingly, enjoy painting. Now... Research and Writing is already overwhelming me. I have a paper due tomorrow - on 50 pieces in the gallery - full description and critique for each. When I look around in that class, I swear I'm the youngest in there too! Slightly unnerving. You see, people in there have taken it 2 or 3 times... I refuse for that to be me. But I'm almost through with it and don't have Friday classes.

Pike asked me to design their philanthropy t-shirt! I get a free one and I'm actually going to get payed, pretty sweet deal! It comes in long and short sleeve, the Greek letters are on the pocket, image on the back - support or participate!

Prayer Request

I have a prayer request.

I was born in Memphis and lived there till I was almost three. My mom and dad worked and my second cousin babysat me. Caroline (Lina) took care of me and we instantly had a bond. She told me the other day that she'd take me outside only in my diaper, give me paper and paint, and let me make a mess then clean me up before my mom got back - my mom doesn't know that story. Caroline is an amazing artist and also did my first portrait and to this day it's one of my favorite paintings.

Since then we'd have family Christmas' together but in the past 5 to 6 years I really haven't gotten to see that part of my family. I should take much more advantage of living in Oxford and being 45 minutes away.

For New Years, my friends and I went to the Peabody. It was a great night until the end... at 3 a.m. Caroline and Greg came and picked me up and were so sweet to me after I had woken them up. The next day I got to show Lina all of my art I've been doing in college. I've really missed her.

A person who has always inspired me. Encouraged me. And was probably the first person to give me a paint brush. Please have her in your prayers. I love my Lina.

Book Arts

Kind of amazing.

Just found this while researching for my intercession class. I'm in Book Arts with Katherine Fields.... KATHERINE FIELDS! But really. In case you don't know, she will be in history books as a woman influencing the feminine movement of art TODAY. I am so lucky, she's like the coolest person ever. And not to mention I'm loving the class! I'll be photographing my work and upload it soon!

NASAD

Oh my gosh! I just found out my teacher, Wes, picked two of my paintings to send to the NASAD review!!! Ah!!!!! The National Association of Schools for Arts and Design - big. Big. He's sending my painting of my grandmother's house and that tea pot that he loves! I'm so surprised and honored!! He's going to frame them and send them in! Just unreal.

I suppose I should mention that my Graphic Design II presentation/final day went so well!!! I found out that my wine bottle label was chosen and will be used by Terry Lee's wine!!!! Ah!!! So crazy, honored, and excited! I expect to get a few bottles for photography soon and of course for taste. My day planner is just beautiful. And my folder is fabulous! I think I'm going to continue to explore this square theme going with my promotional pieces, not sure about a square cut business card, but definitely going with a square letterhead. Square envelopes may be too expensive... I'll think about it.

My final for painting was a huge success! It looks much better in person. The theme was create a narrative and supposedly it was the most successful in the class. I learned so much about light while painting this, so interesting. So that presentation was yesterday, but today one of the painting professors in the Art Department stopped me. He told me that I should not stop painting and that my piece was the best in the class. I almost cried, he was so sweet to go out of his way to tell me that.

I worked so hard in both of those classes and I really feel that they payed off. I had the best and most supportive professors, not only in painting and graphics but every art class this semester. I've learned so much in just 18 weeks and can't believe I'm in the BFA program; I'm doing exactly what I've always dreamed and wanted.

Totally redid everything! Still working on it though... Can't wait to take Web Design next semester b/c I'll know how to read and type my own crazy html codes, life will be easier.

I actually really love my Color Theory final project. I've uploaded my wine bottle labels from Graphics II also so slowly catching up on all I've done. Most of my new art is posted in "Photo-imaging'' at the top of the page. My final for Graphics will be in tomorrow so I'll have that photographed and loaded soon! Also all my origami butterflies and their carrying folders will be in too!! I'm super excited!!!!

Almost Thanksgiving break!!! I have so much art to upload! I can't wait to have all of my art up from Beginning Painting and Graphic Design II - its looking good. Dont think I'll load anything from Color Theory cause its just the basics like color wheels and shifts, nothing too impressive. My final for Graphics is stressing my teacher out but I think I can do it lol! I'm in the BFA now so it has to be something awesome!
I'll say more later. And I can't wait to redesign this blog.....!

Not only is this my first mobile post but its also my first horse drawing!

Just have the feet to finish! The colors are actually rose, blue, and lime green... no orange lol! Cameras. But either way I'm loving it already!

WALKING THROUGH A WALL
Unlike flying or astral projection, walking through walls is a totally earth-related craft, but a lot more interesting than pot making or driftwood lamps. I got started at a picnic up in Bowstring in the northern part of the state. A fellow walked through a brick wall right there in the park. I said, "Say, I want to try that." Stone walls are best, then brick and wood. Wooden walls with fiberglass insulation and steel doors aren't so good. They won't hurt you. If your wall walking is done properly, both you and the wall are left intact. It is just that they aren't pleasant somehow. The worst things are wire fences, maybe it's the molecular structure of the alloy or just the amount of give in a fence, I don't know, but I've torn my jacket and lost my hat in a lot of fences. The best approach to a wall is, first, two hands placed flat against the surface; it's a matter of concentration and just the right pressure. You will feel the dry, cool inner wall with your fingers, then there is a moment of total darkness before you step through on the other side.

A late addition, my drawing 211 final project. Done in one 24 hour setting, poor planning on my part. Still proud of it but still see where there is work to be done. Either way, got an A!

One more thing to add before I go! Reid's Valentine's present! He loved it =]] His dog Bo, the "coolest dog" but now I have to do one of the real coolest dog, my Eli! I'm thinking pastels? We'll see.

Riding around the Country with my dad and dog taking pictures on a beautiful day!

"Before I really got into photography as a serious hobby, this was the question I asked more often than any other. When I looked at the pictures other people were making, I was hit simultaneously with waves of curiosity, followed closely by sharp pangs of jealousy. How does one take a picture that is as pleasant to look at as it is expressive? I so wanted to be able to take a good-looking picture that was easy on the eye and told a story.

I set about firing off messages to some of my favorite flickr photographers at a machine-gun pace: What kind of camera do you use? What mode is your camera set on? What do you use to edit your pictures? Where are the best places to photograph people?

Of those flickr-ers I asked, one (I can’t remember who) sent me a message that said something to the effect of “don’t worry about what I use to shoot. Just go take the pictures you like.” I was furious. What kind of response is that?

Without the confidence of owning the proper gear how could I take these impossible pictures of perfectly juxtaposed street scenes? How could I photograph a fleeting moment of abrupt humanity in a crowded market, let alone the quiet isolation of an abandoned city neighborhood? Where would I begin to look? Where do I begin going about finding these people and places, and what is the first step in making that picture?

The reality dawned on me when I realized that you simply don’t. Your gear does not make you a better photographer. You don’t go looking for a certain face, or a certain scene. If you set about discovering only one thing in particular, you deny yourself the opportunity to find anything else. Documentary and street photography are less about photographing any one thing so much as they are about photographing anything.
